Information was received regarding a CIT heist on the R543, approximately 6 km outside Piet Retief on the Wakkerstroom road. Upon arrival, no injuries were reported at the scene. A Mercedes Benz was found, with a fire starting near the fuel tank. Witnesses stated that the suspects set the fire before fleeing the scene. The fire was quickly contained, preventing significant damage to evidence.
Three vehicles were involved in the heist: the Mercedes Benz (found at the scene), a grey Toyota Hilux bakkie with a canopy (abandoned in the veld), and a white Mercedes-Benz hatchback with a sunroof, which served as the getaway vehicle. Witnesses reported that the suspects traveled in the direction of Vryheid. Both Newcastle and Vryheid were activated.
The exact amount of money taken is unknown at the time of reporting, and the getaway vehicle was not captured on any cameras. NCA handed the case over to SAPS for further investigation and withdrew from the scene.
