GP RESPONSE TEAM
Date: 08 July 2025

Location: Small Holdings, Grootvlei East

Summary:
NCA Reaction members responded to a call regarding an explosion on a smallholding along the R101 in Grootvlei East.

Upon arrival, it was confirmed that a tent had caught fire and exploded, resulting in the tragic death of a 2-year-old toddler who was inside the tent at the time.

According to individuals on the premises, the child was under the care of his grandmother while the parents were working nearby. It is alleged that a candle was left burning inside the tent, and while the grandmother took another toddler to the bathroom, the candle fell, igniting the tent and causing a gas cylinder inside to explode.

Two men on site attempted to rescue the child but were unsuccessful. By the time the fire brigade arrived, the fire had largely been contained, and the child’s body had been respectfully covered.

The child’s parents received on-scene trauma support following the incident.

Humanitarian Response:
Arrangements are underway to provide the affected family with a Wendy house, as well as food, clothing, and other essential items, as they lost all their belongings in the fire.

Condolences:
NCA extends our heartfelt condolences to the family during this time of immense sorrow.

Acknowledgment:
We thank all emergency personnel and community members who assisted at the scene for their compassion and swift response.
