We were contacted by a member of the public who had seen a suspect running through the field carrying a gas cylinder. The member requested assistance, stating that he was already pursuing the man and intended to detain him. When we arrived at the scene, the suspect had already been apprehended by the member of the public. SAPS was contacted immediately, but at that stage, it was still unclear where the gas cylinder had been stolen from.
An elderly man in the area confirmed that the cylinder belonged to him and positively identified it as his property.
The suspect explained in detail that there were two of them involved in the theft, but the second suspect managed to escape. The suspect provided SAPS with the necessary details of the accomplice. SAPS intends to follow up on this information to apprehend the second suspect later.
Suspect transported to the police station, where he was formally placed under arrest. Detectives will continue the investigation.
