With the abalone season open, poaching is the biggest threat to this delicacy and its illegal trade has exploded in recent years. Abalones are one of the many organisms threatened with extinction due to overfishing and poaching. Their high market worth no longer allows them to grow to full maturity and what is taken from the oceans, is becoming smaller and smaller.
