Catfishing is identity theft. Perpetrators use images and information from other people’s social media profiles to create a new identity online. These newly created social media accounts are used for a myriad of reasons: financial gain through knocksand-scams; to damage the reputation of the true owner of the identity or to form dishonest relationships online which include child pornography. Perpetrators will go to extreme lengths to create fake identities over long periods – having multiple social media accounts with the purpose of building and validating these false identities and entrapping their victims.
