Copper theft is a very dangerous crime – it also creates huge financial losses, especially in the maintenance of infrastructure, accumulative costs of safety and security services, policing, court representation and sentencing. Statistics show that the direct losses incurred by the various state-owned entities (Eskom, Transnet, PRASA and Telkom) as a result of theft add up to more than R7 billion a year.
