The 2023 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) shows that corruption is thriving across the world. The CPI ranks 180 countries and territories around the globe by their perceived levels of public sector corruption, scoring on a scale of 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean). Denmark maintains its position as the least corrupt country with a score of 90, while Somalia tops the list as the most corrupt with a score of 11. South Africa rates a 41 on this scale, and our country’s CPI score has markedly declined over the past five years. Corruption generally refers to the abuse of entrusted power for personal gain or to gain an undue advantage.
