NCA SUCCESS REPORT
KZN RESPONSE TEAM
05 May 2026

An NCA member was present at a school sports event involving his children when a motor vehicle incident occurred on the school premises. A stationary vehicle unexpectedly began rolling backwards into a bushy area adjacent to the sports field. Approximately five seconds after movement was first observed, the vehicle struck a child, causing immediate alarm among bystanders. Two parents, including the NCA member, responded without delay and lifted the vehicle to extricate the trapped child from underneath. Once the child was removed, an initial assessment was conducted in accordance with basic emergency care training. The patient presented with a minor laceration above the eye and extensive soft tissue injury with significant skin loss to the right leg, consistent with being run over by a vehicle. The NCA member retrieved an Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK) from his vehicle and provided immediate wound care, including bandaging of the head and leg injuries. Assistance was requested from a medical practitioner present at the venue. Due to communication challenges, additional assistance was provided by other attending parents to ensure effective coordination. An ambulance was requested; however, local emergency medical services were already committed to another incident at the same location. A secondary ambulance service (Mounties Ambulance Services) was subsequently dispatched. Advanced Life Support (ALS) personnel arrived on scene and assumed care of the patient. With consent from the child’s mother, pain management was administered, including intravenous analgesia and fluids. Further ALS assessment confirmed multiple injuries, including: Shoulder dislocation, suspected fractures of two ribs, Clavicle fracture, Significant soft tissue injury with approximately 35% skin loss to the leg and Sutured laceration above the eye (5 stitches). The shoulder was successfully reduced and immobilised in a sling. The patient was stabilised and transported to hospital for further treatment. The driver of the vehicle accepted responsibility for the incident and was taken into custody by responding law enforcement officials. The matter was handed over to SAPS for further investigation. The vehicle was also secured and handed over to SAPS. All relevant medical documentation was completed in accordance with ambulance protocols. This incident highlights the importance of basic first aid preparedness and the value of emergency medical knowledge in public environments. Immediate intervention by bystanders and coordinated emergency response played a critical role in the stabilisation of the patient.

NCA extends its sincere appreciation to all role players for their swift response, effective coordination, and professional cooperation, which contributed to the successful management of this incident.
